Hi, my name is

Kevin D.

I build things for the healthcare space.

I'm a backend engineer currently building APIs, microservices, AI agentic workflows, and test automation for a large-scale healthcare provider onboarding platform over at Optum.

About Me

Hello! My name is Kevin and I enjoy building applications to solve complex problems. My interest in software development started back in 2021 when I decided to enroll in a college course Introduction to Programming in Java over at UIC— turns out I really enjoyed programming and the satisfaction of taking an idea, working through the problems, and eventually seeing it come to life.

After getting the fundamentals and core principles of programming down, I started building small personal projects to put what I was learning into practice. Those projects eventually helped me land my first internship at Zoro as a Software Engineering Intern, which really kickstarted my career in software development. At Zoro, I learned how to write automated test scripts and helped improve and expand my team's automated test suite.

Fast forward to present day, I've been making an impact at Optum by building much more complex applications that help support our organization's mission; making healthcare more accessible and easier to navigate for both providers and the people they serve.

Here are a few technologies I’ve been working with recently:

  • MongoDB
  • PostgreSQL
  • Spring Boot
  • Node.js
  • LangGraph
  • Retrieval Augmented Generation

Where I’ve Worked

Software Engineer I @ Optum/UHG

Jan 2023 - Present

  • Designed, built, and deployed a production ReAct-based AI agent on GCP using LangGraph/Google ADK and GPT models to execute multi-step reasoning over structured healthcare and insurance data.
  • Developed and deployed 20+ RESTful APIs across 12 services using Java Spring Boot and Hibernate/JPA, supporting provider onboarding workflows for 10,000+ healthcare providers and handling approximately 500K requests monthly.
  • Modernized a legacy Spring Boot platform by integrating AI agents to automate normalization of healthcare data into FHIR-compliant canonical models for downstream processing.
  • Developed a Python-based test automation framework for CI/CD pipelines covering 2,000+ test scenarios, eliminating days of manual testing and reducing regression test execution to approximately 30 minutes.
  • Improved application security by remediating 100+ vulnerabilities, migrating 12 Docker images to Chainguard hardened images, and integrating SonarQube into CI/CD pipelines to detect vulnerabilities before deployment.
  • Built comprehensive unit, integration, load, and performance test suites using JUnit, Mockito, Pytest, Playwright, and JMeter to improve application reliability and identify performance bottlenecks.
